Laser Cutting Materials:
TechLab keeps some materials on hand for your projects. We cannot guarantee that we stock any specific materials. If you have a specific project you are looking to work on, please plan to bring your own supplies.
When bringing in outside materials, please retain your receipt so TechLab staff can check that it is a laser safe material. You must present proof that the material is that which you claim, either with a label on the material or a receipt showing what it is. We do not guarantee material availability and encourage you to bring your own.
Due to multiple instances of incorrectly labeled materials, acrylic purchased on Amazon cannot be used in our laser cutter.
Please review our list of acceptable and not acceptable materials:
Required Training:
To use the laser you must first complete the Laser Safety training. Our training consists of two parts, an online canvas course and in-person training. The online component covers basic material safety and TechLab laser operating procedures. The in-person training covers safety procedures and how to operate the LightBurn software and the Boss laser cutter. During the in-person training you will complete a quick guided project.
Please email sdl@emory.edu to get access to our laser safety training on canvas and to schedule the in-person component.
In addition, you must have a trained staff member verify your cut settings before starting a cut, for the first 3 times you use it.
