Poster and Photo Printing

The Computing Center at Cox Hall offers 36-inch printers for the Emory community to use for academic/research poster printing. MediaLab also has a 24-inch printer for high-quality satin photo and art printing.

Like other EaglePrint printers around campus, these are self-service resources. Staff are available to assist with settings, but it is your responsibility to ensure that files are sent to the printer correctly. EaglePrint does not issue refunds except in the event of equipment failure.

If a full-service printing option is desired, contact Document Services which can also accept speedtypes, cash, and credit cards as payment.

Design Considerations

Powerpoint is often used for designing academic posters, and is free for Emory students. Canva and Adobe Express are free, user-friendly alternatives for graphic design. More advanced design programs Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop are also available on workstations in the Computing Center, MediaLab, and ECDS.

Additionally, there are many templates, tips, and guidance on the Undergrad Research Programs webpage linked below.

Creating a Research Poster

It's best to create your poster at the correct size from the start. In Powerpoint, go to the Design tab, then choose Slide Size, and select Page Setup or Custom. Then you can input the desired dimensions.

The academic poster printer is 36 inches wide, so one of your poster's dimensions – either the short or long side – will be 36 inches. Common sizes are 24"x36" or 36"x48". Content should be constrained to the size of the slide/canvas/artboard/etc – not hanging over the sides or off the bottom. Our printers cannot do borderless printing, so if your design extends all the way to the edge of your slide, it will be scaled down slightly to fit on the 36" page.

The Computing Center does offer a large-format paper cutter if you need to trim excess paper from one or more edges.

Printing generally requires very high-quality images, so it's best to save and use images of the highest resolution possible.

For logos and graphics, .svg (scalable vector graphic) format is ideal because the quality is identical at any size. Another good format for logos is high-resolution .png (portable network graphic) because this format allows for transparency. Read more about the differences in these formats here.

Creating a Research Poster

Simplicity is the essence of design! It's best to stick to a limited color palette, using 2-4 solid colors consistently rather than lots of different hues and gradients. Consider how colors might complement or contrast each other (Adobe offers a deep dive on color theory), and always prioritize text legibility!
